Description
The northern half of Cygnus the swan is home to many of the most dynamic and distinctive nebulae in the summer sky. The North America and Pelican Nebulae glow pinkish to the upper left, while the Butterfly / Gamma Cygni complex shines a deeper crimson at the center of this image, with the Crescent Nebula barely visible amid the swarms of stars farther south. The entire field is framed against the Great Rift - a massive cloud of dark dust that seems to split the Milky Way in half down the center of the image.
