The Great Galaxy in Andromeda - currently on a collision course with the Milky Way at around 150 km/second. Start panicking ...in about 3 billion years when it reaches us.

This huge spiral galaxy is home to more than half a trillion stars and spans over 200,000 light years - twice as large as our own galaxy. Under dark skies, the visible portion spans more than 3 degrees (6 moon diameters).

100 minutes total exposure time. Equipment: Losmandy G11-G, Takahashi Epsilon 130 (430mm f/3.3), SBIG ST-4000 XCM.

I would have thought 100 minutes exposure would show a blur from the earth turning around? So how does this work?
:icondoomwillfindyou:
Hello pixcicle,

The telescope mount I am using - the Losmandy G-11 Gemini - is motorized and tracks targets after the computer moves the scope to center them. Also, my camera - the SBIG ST-4000 XCM - has two chips: the main 4.2 MP CCD chip takes the image while a second, smaller 0.3 MP chip locks onto a single star and uses its position to correct errors in my tracking every 5 seconds or so. Lastly, I didn't take a single 100 minute exposure, as that would have really overexposed the galaxy core and brighter stars. I took 10 x 10 min exposures, combined them with Median Combine in MaxIm DL 3 (to weed out remaining hot and cold pixels) and then processed the lot in Photoshop CS2. Complicated yes, but it seems to work well for me!

The doom found us. We are in the hands of the doom from our first birth: The "Psychogénesis".

Wow! Awesome! It's great to finally have another really good astrophotographer on deviantART for me to envy! Keep up the good astrophotos!

Bad astronomy humor:

Yo mama\'s so fat, that from some line of sight, she\'s gravitationally lensing a quasar.

really impressive!
it makes us realise that we are nothing and that we are not about to find another kind of life in this infinity :p

What two coins make thrity cents? One is not a quarter! :plotting:

I did not realize the process for taking these shots was so lengthy and had so many elements and steps (I read one of your above posts explaining how you took it). All the more reason to add this to my favorites becuase it's so good!
